Camps A Rising, an organization supporting the fossil fuel resistance movement recently expanded. With the addition of Carol Johnson as Financial Analyst she is leading CAR’s unique effort at establishing a new and higher bar for financial accountability.
Joe Plouff, founder of Camps A Rising offers some history of the group. He said, “Camps A Rising began as an organization supporting water protectors involved in peaceful direct action. Experience led us to believe in two overriding concepts. The first was that after Standing Rock the climate change resistance had to adopt new ways of supplying gear to those on the ground. Money would be tight as the movement spread all across the U.S. and Canada. Funding priorities must adapt to smaller actions with supplies based on need. Secondly, we heard that donors desired organizations to be very open and financially accountable.”
In highlighting some of Johnson’s skill, Plouff said, “Over the last few months Carol reorganized the way CAR reports our finances. She improved CAR’s accountability developing clear online practices. These practices allow our donors to, ‘follow the money they contribute to CAR’. Once a donor participates in a CAR Action Project their money is invested in supplying the fossil fuel resistance. Our donors are able to view the exact sales receipts their money funded.” Carol has a deep understanding of processes nonprofits may implement to show accountability.
Camps A Rising hosts a financial accountability portal housing three key links. The first leads the public to the online checkbook and financial data updated in real time. The Donor List informs the donor of the Purchase Number or sales receipt that their money was used for. Thirdly, the Portal links to online resources that contain sales receipts the donor can view. That file will show the donor the exact purchase they supported with their money.
Johnson said, “Follow the money through…Camps A Rising’s Portal. This financial accountability package shows us to be extremely accountable to our members and donors.”
